J.R.R. Tolkien describes mankind as "sub creators" - made in the image of God, so we are also creators. Unlike God, we cannot make something out of nothing, and therefore, in all our creative efforts, we borrow from God's creation around us.
At Schaeffer Academy, we teach art in a way that allows our students first to observe and imitate the world around us, and to appreciate the great works of art that have preceded us. This approach fits the Grammar stage, where students learn the basics of technique.
As students grow into the Logic and Rhetoric stages of instruction and enter Studio Art, they receive assignments that allow their creativity to flourish. They are still expected to observe, but to also use technique and style to create an individual artistic view.
By showing the world in a new way, we may cause others to see creation itself in a new way, and, perhaps, to see God himself in his handiwork.
